With the developing of automotive industry, the requests for automobile's safety performance are getting higher and higher, which promotes the development of many kinds of testing instrumentations used in automobile's safety test. However the traditional testing instrumentations are commonly single functional, poor adaptability and highly cost for replacement, all of these shortcomings seriously restricts the testing efficiency and the promotion of a variety of test items, which to some extent hinders the development of automobile's safety testing industry. Therefore, the development of a versatile, easy to operate, small size, easy expansion and adaptive automobile's safety testing instruments is especially necessary.Based on the needs-analysis of common test items in automobile's safety test field, a design of multi-functional automobile's safety test system based on virtual instrument is promoted.The virtual instrument system is consist of application software, data acquisition hardware and data transfer subsystem. The application software is developed using LabVIEW embedded environment, and it includes three modules: data transfer and command sending program, user interface, data processing; the data acquisition hardware is designed to be adaptive to several kinds of output signal of sensors, there are several signal conditioning circuits, and the whole hardware is controlled by a ATmega128 micro-controller; the data transfer subsystem is designed a combination of USB data bus and wireless communication, which eliminates the need for data transmission cable.In order to verify the practicability of the developed multi-functional virtual instrumentation, based on the analysis of brake performance testing and glass transmission rate detection, the brake performance testing function and glass transmission rate detection function are accomplished using the developed virtual instrumentation.Finally, the developed instrument has been calibrated, the results show that the system meets the automobile's safety testing requirements.
