As China's vehicle production growing, the demand for automotive testing equipment is also increasing. The rapid development of testing equipment could ensure the healthy development of China's automobile industry. Chassis dynamometer is an important vehicle testing equipment, which can simulate the road condition, so it can be used in the test chamber for car emissions, noise, vibration and other tests. Not only can it improve the working environment of the test staff, but also improve the accuracy of the test.The chassis dynamometer is transporting easily and reduced working space because of the structure of mid-mounted. The AC motor of dynamometer is grid feedback and maintenance-free, so it could improve the life and economy of the chassis dynamometer. This study of the chassis dynamometer owns the advanced technology in current world.This article begins with the principle of chassis dynamometer and building the mechanical model, and describes in detail the working principle of the dynamometer from the structure and road simulation. Besides, it designs the overall dynamometer and various important parts, which highlights the roll, motor, and continuous driving mechanism. In the system hardware design, we use the Siemens control cabinet and PROFIBUS fieldbus. The control strategy is direct torque control, which improves the accuracy of the system and makes the whole system stable and reliable. In the system software design, the flow chart and the main module diagram are given. In addition,we analysis the PID control theory. Finally, the subject of chassis dynamometer is calibration,which mainly include force sensors, speed sensors, inertia, parasitic resistance, coast-down. After calibration, we test the road and the chassis dynamometer on the contrast with a car. The results show that the the system is accurate.
