Reducing oil consumption of engine, specially when the engine is in high load and high speed condition, by analysing and testing the structure, material and surface treatment of piston rings, generally will extend service life of motorcycle, specially extend the service life of tricycle by designing piston rings which can bear much higher heat and give better sealing。By analyzing the dynamics of piston rings, factors affecting piston rings and oil consumption were studied. Studies were also carried out on effect of piston ring design parameter to lubricating film, effect of gap balance between the first piston ring and the second piston ring to oil consumption, effect of pressure on the surface of oil-ring to oil consumption and effect of tracking coefficient to oil consumption, by analyzing material of piston rings, the surface treatment method of the piston rings.Following conclusions are obtained by redesigning piston rings with bigger tracking coefficient–"U"and with a certain gap balance between the first and the second piston rings for TD175CC engine1)Closure gap of the second piston ring affects oil consumption greatly. The oil consumption is less when the closure gap of the second piston ring is bigger than the closure gap of the first piston ring.2)Specific consumption depends on tracking coefficient–"U"of piston rings, specially depends on the tracking coefficient of the oil-ring. Oil consumption is lower when the"U"value is bigger. Oil consumption can be reduced by improving oil-scraping ability of the piston rings.
