Hydraulic excavator is one of the major of construction machine, and the working device is one of the key parts, so the performance and reliability of the working device is a significant symbol of the machine. So the paper makes study on the characteristic analysis and optimal design of hydraulic excavator working device. The three-dimensional model of working device is established with Pro/E, and then the envelope diagram was obtained by carrying the simulation. Creating the link between Pro/E and ADAMS by the software MECHANISM/Pro, the working range was obtained by kinematics simulation. It shows that design of the working device is reasonable. The working device was considered as a whole, and the optimization and design of mathematical model was built. The excavator digging force is the objective function, and the geometrical device parameters of the hinge points are the design variables. The optimization problem was solved by the program designed based on genetic algorithm. Under the conditions of ensuring the excavator working range to a reasonable range, the example shows that excavator digging performance can be improved significantly by just doing a little adjustment of the work device hinge arrangement。Based on the optimal results above and Pro/E, five typical working statuses of working device before and after optimization was established. Creating the link between Pro/E and ANSYS, importing the three dimensional model into ANSYS and the overall working device finite element model was established, at last the static analysis were conducted by ANSYS. Establishing finite element model based on experimental test conditions, and then the working device's stress was obtained. Then the theoretical results and experimental results were compared to verify the finite element calculations are correct. Therefore, this approach provides the theoretical basis for improving the design of working device and the reliability of the working device.
