Being the main carrier of shield machine to complete tunneling capabilities, the cutter head is a crucial factor in influencing the performance of shield machine. It is a key to the shield machine to designing the cutter head that is compatible with stratigraphic excavation. The design of the cutter head is a complex process that including multi-input multi-output involving not only the cutter system parameters, but also geological parameters and the construction parameters. And the key is how to link these parameters to complete the cutter head design process. Therefore, this article makes a research on the geological suitability cuter head design methods an process.Some achievements were made in the Present study as follows:(1) Based on the analysis of the functions and failure, the user demand of the cutter head design was established. In an addition, based on the analysis of the relationship between geological parameters, construction parameters and the cutter system structure, the mapping from the geological parameters to the cutter structure was established through the user needs as the center. Therefore, it provides the theoretical guidance for the cutter-head designing.(2) Based on the analysis of the relevant literature and engineering application, the rule of cutter head designing was established. Therefore it provides important methods and basis for the cutter-head designing for its effectiveness and practicality.(3) The core content is to establish the model of prediction of the aperture ratio of the cutter head based on BP neural network. Because of the complexity, non-deterministic and nonlinear in the process of the cutter head design, this paper applies BP neural network in the cutter head design. And it demonstrates the correctness and feasibility of this model by examples.(4) A case-based reasoning cutter prediction model using experience by analytic hierarchy process is proposed. The model overcomes the difficulty of measuring experience for determining the weights of attributes. It has been verified by examples that the model using the analytic hierarchy process was accurate, reliable, and explanatory for solving new problems using experience from previous cases.(5) Based on the analysis of the design process of mechanical products and design methods, a process of the cutter head based on the Sequential engineering and Reverse engineering was established. And its feasibility has been verified through examples.(6) The cutter head three-dimensional model was established. And we made the analysis of structural strength of the cutter head using the analysis software. Therefore, it also founded a theoretical basis for the planet of the digital technology.
