With the rapid growth of China’s economy, the construction of infrastructure urban has been developing quickly in recent years. Shield construction is a safe, effective widely applicable method in urban transportation construction, especially in the tunnel engineering of underground railways and pipelines. With the superiority of the technical and financial, the EPB shield machine is the main steam technology in shield construction and widely used in the world.The EPB shield machine is the special construction machinery for tunnel driving. The cutter head is one of key parts of EPB shield, and is important one ensures EPB shield running efficiently. The cutter head design is not only closely linked to its mechanical systems, but related to the geological situation. The aim of the paper is to research, design and optimize the cutter head of the composite EPB shield machine. The main research content of the present paper includes following aspects:1) Simulating the dynamic process of shield driving, and studying how the opening ratio should affect the differential pressure of cutter head.2) Summarizing the basic theory of designing the composite EPB shield Machine. Analyzing the water and earth pressures, torque and thrust resistance of the cutter head experience in the strata, and concluding calculation methods of these data.3) Studing the driving system, forms, structural design and distribution of the cutter head for multiplex strata, and giving the design process of the driving system.4) Analyzing the stresses and distributions of distortion of the cutter head for the tunneling process.Establishing three dimensional geometry models and the finite element analysis model of the earth-pressure type shield cutter head.5) Taking the light weight of the shield ham into account, and proposing a mathematical model on ham optimal design.With the hydro- geological exploration of Nan Jing metro line 3 as well as the design proposals and processes discussed in this paper, the suitable shield cutter head is designed, which provides theoretical foundation and practical experience for the future study.
