The research on the optimization of hull form is multidisciplinary. It is one of the key issues within the ship design industry. The characteristics of the hull form have a profound effect on the performance of ships. Through studying the material, the ship design methods in recent years will be introduced in the paper. Have a comparative research between the traditional design methods and parameterized ones. Meanwhile, the merit, development history and application status of parameterized methods are summarized.Along with the development of the shipbuilding technology and being applied more broadly of computers, more and more attention will be paid to the research of mathematical hull. During researching the design methods, combined with deeply studying the knowledge of mathematical hull, the method of longitudinal function will be adopted in the paper.As an ordinary design method,2D design method is verified feasible through practice and experiments. Owing to its limitations, some of the design requirements cannot be met. Additionally, the change of hull curvature is complicated, we need a method to actually feel what the hull was shaped. So adopting 3D design software and developing its function with a programming language is the solution. A secondary development is applied to CATIA V5 by using VB.Net programming language. It can achieve the automation design of hull form and surfaces by virtue of powerful surface design function based on it.The optimization of ship resistance performance is an indispensable part of the entire optimization process. There are three methods which can be used to estimate the ship resistance, experience formula method, model testing method and numerical simulation method. Highly automatic optimization process is achieved from ship hull designing to performance estimation by adopting the numerical simulation method. The human factors of controlling the optimization process will be reduced greatly, and the efficiency of optimization will be improved markedly. The CFD method was added into the hull form optimization process. Aim at forecasting the resistance performance of design scheme offered by the design module.From the above, the paper was designed to seek an effective, practical mathematical model and a method which can express the hull form quickly and efficiently. Moreover, obtain the optimal solution by estimating the resistance performance based on the design scheme.
