Due to its highly precise orientation,high adaptability in all the weathers,and its independent north-finding at any time and locations,gyroscopes have been one of the major orientation instruments used in the support of artillery survey. The current equipped artillery gyroscopes, which need manual measurement when searching for true north, can not meet the requirements of modern artillery operations for its low automation. Therefore, to adjust to the requirements of informationalized artillery operation, it is necessary to explore how to combine modern sensing technology, digital signal processing technology and automatic control technology with current gyroscope to achieve digitalized and automatic measurement for gyroscopes used in artillery.Firstly this paper has made a general review about the research of gyroscope north-finding technology home and abroad and studied the working principle and measuring method used by artillery gyroscopes. Through the comparative analyses among the common methods used in north-finding, such as magnetic needle method and astronomical measurement, a significant characteristic of the north-finding achieved by a gyroscope with inertia property is presented clearly, namely, little limitation of weather conditions, observing time and measuring locations. Therefore, this kind of gyroscope can fully achieve the all-weather and automatic north-finding operations. Its swift measurement, convenient operation and high precision can meet the requirements of north-finding operation in field, high maneuverability in field and all-weather operation. Nowadays, most of gyroscopes developed in China are still semi-automatic instruments which would be operated manually at some essential steps when it is used. However, as the development of artillery equipments, reaction speed of artillery firepower has been boosted considerably, survey support, the basic operation for artillery fire direction, has been facing a severe challenge for its equipments can not meet the requirements of swiftness in future war and all-weather supporting ability. The key reason for this problem is that the quick acquisition of precise orientation still can not be achieved. Therefore, the research studied in this paper focuses on the equipped artillery gyroscopes and tries to improve those ones. Digitalized automatic measuring technology of artillery gyroscopes is also studied to achieve automatic orientation of gyroscopes and provide direct guidance for the training in troops. In one word, the key purpose of this study is to meet the requirements of artillery swift reaction.This paper presents the modification of theodolite, the installation of digital sensors on elevating assembly and traversing assembly and the improvement of original major optical path system on artillery gyroscopes. All these modifications are based on current equipments to realize the collection of cursor signals on gyroscopes and theodolites and to construct a data collecting and movement signal processing system in artillery gyroscope. Depending on the features and requirements of artillery reconnaissance support, this paper also provides a proposal that the magnetic needle method which is usually used to determine coarse north can be adopted as a practical assistant method used in troops. Based on the research and analysis of true north-finding principle used by artillery gyroscope, this paper has presented the design of a gyroscope digital measuring system to achieve the digitalization of gyroscope used by artillery to meet the requirement of automatic measuring operation.
