The substation of large power plants is very important in the power system. It directly affects the safety and reliability of system operation. The lightning inrush overvoltage is the main factor which causes lightning accidents of substations and power plants. It is particularly important to research on the reliability of lightning protection in Guangdong Province where is the lightning damage prone areas. This paper researches on the protection of lightning intruding surge of substations in lightning damage prone areas.The paper takes Zhanjiang Orimulsion power plant as researching porject. According to the lightning conditions, considering that the lightning current directly hits on the lightning striking point, meanwhile combining the transmission line including iron towers and lightning wires with the busbars, connected lines, electric equipment of the substation as the whole part, the calculation of the lightning intruding surge should be taken according to the following conditions:Different operation modes.Considering the counter-attack and shielding failure.Considering the changing of lightning striking points and in near area the lightning of #1 to #6 towers (approximately 2.4km) shall be taken into consideration.Considering the changing of lightning current amplitude and calculating the lightning current at shielding failure with the revised electric geometry model (EGM) method.The following analysis is made based on the calculating results:Make suggestions for the number and arrangement of the MOA. Confirm whether or not to install surge arresters on the busbar in this project and future.Compute and study the lightning inrush overvoltage of substations with conventional method.Determine the reliability of resistance to lightning with the statistical method.The research could provide authentication for the reliability of resistance to lightning of the Zhanjiang Orimulsion power plant substation and also provide a reference to the lightning protection of the other power plant substation.
