High voltage transmission line is the lifeblood of the power system, Fast and accurate to determine the fault distance to ensure the safety of the power system stability and economic operation has very vital significance. Because of high accuracy and wide application, the technique of traveling wave fault location has been broadly used in power system. Now, the double-end location method is the main location method in most of traveling wave fault location system used in power system and the single-end location method is as the auxiliary location method. The monitored line is configured as double-end method and doesn't use the information of neighboring substation traveling wave location data. If one of traveling wave location equipments is abnormal, it will cause the location faulty. Moreover, with the number rising of application device, the power utility companies also urgently hope that centralized management, centralized maintenance and centralized data analysis of all the traveling wave location equipmentsIn order to deal with the above problem, it was studied the wide area traveling wave fault location system in this paper. Through the full use of the entire grid faulty line traveling wave information, it can mostly avoid the failure of the fault location and improve the reliability of traveling wave location system, ensure the accuracy of location. It realized the centralized management of traveling wave location equipments by using wide area traveling wave location established.The wide area traveling wave location system includes wide area location algorithm, traveling wave signal acquisition, traveling wave signal transmission and the master station. This paper introduces the function and principle. It also introduced the improvement and solution of traveling wave signal acquisition in smart stations.At last, this paper provides some field applications. The actual operation shows that it not only expands the original traveling wave location system function, but also improves the flexibility, practicability and reliability of location system after using the wide area traveling wave location system.
