Transformer substation is the main information source and final executive point in power systems. With the expansion of applications of integrated substation automation in China, conventional substation automation system can not meet recent demands for the development of Smart Grid. So it is very important to do researches on the digital substations.Firstly, this paper analyzed the research status of historical development and present applications of digital substations at home and abroad; pointed out that conventional substation equipments are not equipped with interoperability, information can not be properly shared, system scalability is poor; In addition, affected by secondary cables, the system reliability of those equipments is under qualified, preventing further improvement in reliability, real time, and economy of substations.Secondly, based on the detailed description of main features of digital substations, this paper indicated the advantages of digital substations through comparative analysis of comprehensive automation system, data acquisition, and technical and functional aspects between digital substation and conventional transformer substation. Moreover, based on further researches and analysis of current situation of Shengli Oil field substations, this paper propose development recommendations on 110kV digital substation of Shengli Oil field. According to the situation of substations of Shengli Oil field, it put forward the reform plan of the process layer, the spacer layer, the control layer, which will be conducted by stages respectively.Thirdly, this paper discussed the critical technologies of unconventional mutual inductor, the intelligent circuit breaker and the IEC 61850, which are applied in digital substations. Combining detailed descriptions of features of active electronic current transformer, passive electronic transformer and merging units, this paper analyzed the composition, working process and functions of the intelligent circuit breaker further; introduced about main features of IEC 61850 standard and engineering configuration language emphatically;and showed application issues of the unconventional transformer, the intelligent circuit breaker and the IEC 61850 standard.Finally, this paper did researches on the digital construction project of 220kV salt town digital substation of Shengli Oil field, proposed the general idea of digital scheme for 220kV salt town digital substation; the design of the process layer, the spacer layer and the control layer; and the network project of substations. It provided a solid support in the upcoming constructions of Shengli digital substations.
