| As electronic, information and communications technology developed rapidly, integrated substation automation system has been widely used. But due to limitation of data exchange caused by statute, devices of different manufacturers could not communicate and share resource with others. Devices are independent, don't have interoperability, resulting in duplication of investment, low equipment utilization, poor of scalability, harry of operation. Information collection, transmission, processing and application uesing digital technology are the development direction. Digital technology with high reliability, accuracy and expansion advantages is the development inevitably.This article first introduced the concepts, characters, advantages and application of digital substation; then analyzed the character of IEC 61850 standard system. It unified specification for substation interconnection between various types of equipment; analyzed electronic transformer, intelligent circuit breaker, communication technology and other technologies; finally, proposed an example for the first 110kV digital substation in Beijing, analyzed the technication and economication. Digital substation will have great influence on Beijing substation automation system construction, operation and management, so it is worthy for application.
