Reactive power balance is an essential part of electric power system that ensures the electrical power quality, reducing the electrical network loss and the safe operation. Reasonable supply of reactive power compensation can improve system stability, inhibit voltage drop and system over-voltage, and improve power factor. With the power system development, fast dynamic reactive power compensation is growing demanded. Most currently compensation devices use fixed capacitor compensation or packet switching capacitor compensation that will limit response speed and bring on stepped compensation capacity. It is difficult to meet the reactive power compensation quick and accurate requirements. Therefore, how quickly and effectively carry on power system reactive power compensation is an important research subject in the industry. This paper introduces the purpose and meaning of reactive power compensation, domestic and international situation and development trend of reactive power compensation. This paper analyzes the principle and compensation wiring ways of reactive power compensation, and discusses the best grid position and capacity compensation point configuration problem in several different load cases. In order to solve the needs of multiple high-voltage thyristor series are pressure problems, the paper uses TSC reactive power devices with a step-down transformer. The paper analyzes the switching patterns and the effects of capacitor inrush current and harmonic when switch capacitor. It also describes the system variables and detection algorithms, and analyzes several reactive compensation switching criterion. Finally, this paper simulates the device through the software MATLAB/Simulink, simulation results show that the system can effectively compensate reactive power.
