Automatic tracking compensation arc suppression system can follow the change of the capacitive current, which is very important for the security in the middle-voltage distribution networks. Therefore these types of the arc suppression coils have been widely used in the 6kV-66kV power grids. However arc suppression coils have different control methods and different types. All these bring a series of problems in practical application and product research because of the lack of in-depth analysis and experiment tests on the dynamic performance and compensation effect of different arc suppression coils. So it becomes very urgent to study the performance of different automatic arc suppression coils.After analysing the use and research of automatic compensation arc suppression coil home and abroad, we present the experimental method to study the performance of the different types of automatic compensation arc suppression coil and compensation effects. The conclusions are correct,objective and reliable, which are made by analysing the results of the ground-fault experiments. So we developed 10kV simulation grid and measurement & analysis system to study the performance and compensation effects of the different types of automatic compensation arc suppression coil.10kV simulation grid has the split structure of single buses (bus I and bus II), two transformers and the two buses can be operated in parallel. There are three branches attached to eacher bus in order to simulate lines and cable lines of different length. The measurement and analysis system is based on the virtual instruments technology, and possesses the advantages of fast disposal, friendly interface, program-controlled, strongly expansibility and so on. The analysis and testing system program is developed with the software LabVIEW. LabVIEW has the functions of data acquisition, instrument controlling, measurement analysis and data displaying, and it is a comparatively perfected graph exploitation environment especially designed for measurement and automation applying. The experiment proved the system can complete the task to study the performance and compensation effects of the different types of automatic compensation arc suppression coil.
