With the increasing contradiction between supply and demand of water and the serious waste in water for agricultural usage, water problem has severely restricted the sustainable development of our national economy, and become an important strategic issue of our country. Meanwhile, we are in the low level of research for agricultural irrigation, and the advanced technologies in foreign country are not suitable for our conditions. In order to improve the development of modern irrigation, a remote control system was designed in this project. This system can monitor growth environment crop and irrigate the crop "on-demand". The main research of this paper focuses on:(1) According to the requirements of control irrigation system, an embedded processors (ARM7, LPC2368, Philips Co.) was employed as the controller to automated control a set of valves. These valves can open and close the irrigation pumps in the field. At the same time, the power for control system, clock circuit for controller, serial communication interface and JTAG interface circuit were also designed and debugged. Apart from that, the PCB graph for hardware was drawn and circuit board was made. In the process of design, the reliability and the future possible extension of the system were considered. And also the good work efficiency and stability of the system are needed.(2) According to different of crop irrigation models, different control programs were developed. The control program can realize three different irrigation modes, which are quantified irrigation control, timed irrigation control, the constant capacity irrigation control model. Based on the rate of irrigation water and irrigation time, the irrigation pumps were open and close by the control system, and thus the automated irrigation system was realized. This system basically meets the demand of intelligent crop irrigation. Additionally, communication protocol for RS - 232 bus was designed based on the idea of software and hardware integration design. Through the communication system, a hierarchy control system is obtained which improve the robustness and reliability of the control system. Using C# programming language in Visual studio 2008 development environment, the operation interface and control system were developed. This interface integrates all irrigation control operation, and has good compatibility and is easy to use.(3) A test was conducted in an actual environment. The test shows that the system works well and has a stable performance. And the system can basically satisfy the expected design requirements.
