The fruit of Gardenia jasminoedes.Ellis has being a Chinese traditional medicine issued by Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China. It is very good for liver protecting, gall benefiting, heat removing and pain suppressing. And it contains lots of medical components, such as geniposide and chlorogenic acid and so on. Furthermore, it has natural gardenia yellow or blue pigment. It becomes more and more popular in edible componet market not only because it has the effect of medical care, but also it can be used as coloring matter.By comparing the agronomic traits of four different types of G. jasminoides Ellis from Xiaonan, more biological characteristics can be known. The best type can be selected according to the yield and active components of G. jasminoides in order to be planted at a large scale. And the correlation analysis of agronomic traits to chemical components has be done as well, which gives the theoretic basis for selecting a good type of G. jasminoides. The results showed that:1. There were significant differences for agronomic traits among different types of Gardenia jasminoides.Ellis. For Xiaonan NO.1 the most of the agronomic traits were higer than those of others, such as height, crown, the diameter of stem, number of the first level of branches, the number of branch levels, leaf area, flower size, petal number, stamen number, diameter of fruit, longitude diameter of fruit, width of calyx and water content. For Xiaonan NO.2 some traits, such as crown extent, angle of the first level branches, leaf width, length of calyx, fruit number and weight of fresh fruits, were far more higer than those of others.2. There was a significant difference for medical compontens of different types of G. jasminoides. And the content of gardenia yellow pigment, geniposide and chlorogenic acid for Xiaonan NO.4 are the highest, separately 46.69%,4.312% and 0.068%.The E value of Xiaonan NO.2 is 58.2, the highest among all the types of G. jasminoides and the OD value of Xiaonan NO.1 is the lowest 0.55.3. The correlation analysis of agronomic traits, yield charater and chemical components shows that the yield of G. jasminoides has an extremely significant positive correlation with height, crown, diameter of stem, number of the first level branches, leaf width and fruit number, and it has a significant positive correlation with angle of the first level branches, horizontal diameter and longitudinal diameter of fruit. The content of geniposide has a significant positive correlatin with height of stem and the length-width ration of leaf. The content of chlorogenic acid has a significant correlation with the ration of leaf length and width. The E value has significant positive correlation with crown extent, leaf area and fruit number. There is no any correlation between the content of gardenia yellow pigment, OD value and agronomic traits.4. By sequencing the value of yield per plant, total dry weight, the content of gardenia yellow pigment, E value, OD value, geniposide content and chlorogenic acid content, we found that the yield of Xiaonan NO.2 and NO.3 are 551.46g,525.69g, the total content of geniposide are 10.505g,9.840g, the total content of chlorogenic acid are 0.132g,0.126g, the content of gardenia yellow pigment are 130.09g,97.09g, and the E value are 58.2,53.8, Xiaonan NO.2 and NO.3 have a better performance than NO.1 and NO.4, so we chose NO.2 and NO.3 as the excellent types to be planted at a large scale.
