Ground covers are special community of the landcaping and widely used in the urban green landscape. They can cover surface, inhibit weeds and rich the landscape levels of plant community as well. Moreover, they can be planted in some places where the lawn grass and other plants are not suitable. They had many advantages such as a diversification of kinds, strong ability of adaption, quick speed of covering and facility in manage.Ground covers have been an important branch of the ecological landscape construction. The rational selection and application of ground covers have significance to the urban biodiversity and their ecological effects and landscape functions.In the paper, a lot of site investigation and data collection have been done about the application situation of ground covers in parks in Wuhan. Firstly, the species composition and landscape application are systematically analyzed. Secondly, the reasonable evaluation system has established, and comprehensively evaluated the quality of ground covers. Finally, by collecting the information of native plants in Wuhan, a batch of potential species are recommended which can be domesticated to suit for Wuhan. The main conclusions are as follows:(1) According to the results of the year-round site investigated to the species of ground covers and plant landscape in Wuhan open space greenland, the total ground covers are 183 species, belonging to 58 families,132 genera, which accounted for 39.2% of indigenous plants. The species of plants are not rich enough. The traditional plant species occupy a lager application area such as Liriope spicata, Rhododendron simsii and so on, indigenous plants are used less. The most ornamental features are the colorful, beautiful flowers and the green foliage just srver as a foil to the color.(2) The application modes of ground covers in the three different lighting conditions such as shaded, half-shaded and non-shaded are analyzed. Then the application principle and the landscape skill are expounded combined with examples. Thus the arrangement problems of ground covers are found, and the solutions are proposed.(3) 27 species of ground covers in Wuhan open space are recomended as examples to build the quality evaluation index and evaluation system from plant quality ecological quality and application quality. According to the results, traditional ground covers such as Liriope spicata, Ophiopogon intermedius, Reineckea carnea, Rhododendron simsii have a comprehensively high quality value, verifying their accuracy as the main species. Most of the species are evaluated in grade of I and II.(4) On the basis of referring to the relevant graphic material and books, the native resources of ground covers in Wuhan have been collected and sorted. And then 24 potential species are enumerated to be introduced and domesticated.(5) Three suggestions are put forward to the application of ground covers in Wuhan upon the investigation. The development and utilization of wild indigenous ground covers should be strengthened to enrich the species; The selection of the ground covers should be on the basis of acquaintance of the local land conditions and the ground cover's habit; The maintenance of the plant landscape post planting should be strengthened in the same time of stressing the ecological arrangement, ensuring the sustainability of landscape.
