Relationship Of Serumγ-glutamyl Transpeptidase With Metabolic Syndrome In Elderly People

Objective: To investigate the association of serumγ-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) with Metabolic Syndrome(MS) in elderly people.Methods: A total 1444 people who visited Union Hospital for a medical checkup were included. We measured serum GGT and BMI, lipid profiles, fasting glucose, blood pressure and so on.Result: Serum GGT levels were significantly higher in the MS group compared to the healthy group [25(18~36)vs 18(14~26))U/L; P<0.01]. The prevalence of MS and MS components were all significantly increased from the lowest to highest GGT quartiles (P<0.01). Multiple liner regression showed that GGT is positively associated with DBP,TG,ALT,Uric acid and the number of MS components (P<0.01), but negetively correlated with HDL-c (P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis indicated that serum GGT was a risk factor of MS(OR=1.008, 95%CI: 1.000-1.024, P=0.046).Conclusion: In elderly people, serum GGT is closely related with MS, and may be a screening biomarker of MS after exculding liver diseases.
