Objective To explore the clinical significance of gene diagnosis in detecting micrometastases in lung cancer by detecting Mig-7 mRNA expression in lymph nodes and peripheral blood. Methods The Mig-7 mRNA expression was detected in lesions, lymph nodes and peripheral blood from 30 lung cancer patients and 10 benign pulmonary lesion patients, and in the blood samples from 8 healthy volunteers by RT-PCR.Results The positive rates of Mig-7 mRNA expression were 77%, 51% and 27% in cancer tissues, lymph nodes and peripheral blood from lung cancer patients respectively. No Mig-7 mRNA was expressed in lesions, lymph nodes and peripheral blood from the patients with benign pulmonary lesions or in the peripheral blood from the volunteers. Conclusion The detection of Mig-7 mRNA in lymph nodes and peripheral blood from lung cancer patients by RT-PCR might be beneficial for diagnosing micrometastases early, identifying the stage, and providing important information in the selection of appropriate treatment strategies and for the evaluation of prognosis.
