Background and ObjectiveIn 2010, there are 2391 Chinese journals indexed by various international retrieval systems. However, the quality and the characteristics of these journals are not clear. PubMed is the most powerful database of medical research. The Journal of Southern Medical University has been indexed by PubMed since 2002. In this study, GoPubMed and Chinese Citation Database were used as retrieval tools. Some information on this journal was collected and analyzed as following:the number of articles, the percentage of articles indexed by PubMed, well-known authors, the geographic distribution by city of articles, the status on citing and being cited, and so on. The characteristics and rules of indexed articles, which were published in JSMU, were compared with other four journals indexed by PubMed. The goal of this study was to give some inspiration to the internationalizing development of JSMU and other Chinese biomedical journals.Objects and Methods1 Objects The objects of this study included five domestic university journals, which were indexed by PubMed. They were Journal of Sichuan University (Medical Science Edition) which is formerly Journal of West China University of Medical Sciences, Journal of Central South University (Medical Science), Journal of Peking University (Health Sciences), Journal of Zhejiang University (Medical Sciences) and the Journal of Southern Medical University. They were abbreviated to JSU, JCSU, JPU, JZU and JSMU, respectively. And JSMU was considered as a major object.2 Retrieval tools and methods2.1 PubMedPubMed is a free search engine which affords retrieval and abstract of biomedical literature. It comprises more than 20 210 000 bibliographic items since 1966 when it is accessed on February 20,2011. They are cited from over 5000 journals published in over 70 countries and cover medical science, nursing, theriatrics, healthcare system and preclinical science. For the past few years, the articles indexed by MEDLINE involve in over 30 languages and English articles account for about 90%. The percentage of articles with English abstract in MEDLINE is 70%-80%. Three main methods to search PubMed are by subject, by author and by journal title.2.2 GoPubMedGoPubMed, which website is http://www.gopubmed.com/, is a tool for searching Pubmed. It has not its own database and uses the same data resource as PubMed of the National Library of Medicine. Its statistical and analytical functions embodies following aspects:What, Who, Where and When. Using the function "Statistics" of GoPubMed, such data can be obtained from indexed articles as the number of articles, the geographic distribution by city and the distribution by subject of articles, the distribution of well-known authors and the population of core author. 2.3 Chinese Citation Database in CNKIChinese Citation Database in CNKI collects all references cited by the articles in the databases from China Academic Journals (CD Edition) Electronic Publishing House. It can provide user with the detail information of a cited journal including the statistic of citations, the rank of citing journals, the rank of cited journals, the statistic of authors, the statistic of supported-by-fund articles, the statistic of cited articles, the number of published articles, the download count, H-index and other typical indices such as Price-index, impact factor, diffusing factor, the immediacy index, and so on.Results1 Statistical results on JSMU from GoPubMed1.1 The yearly number and percentage of articles indexed by PubMedBetween 2002 and 2010, the yearly number of indexed articles were 418,467, 475,458,466,471,525,588, and 611, respectively. The yearly percentage were 85.7%,95.1%,94.1%,89.5%,75.0%,71.3%,71.3%,69.9%, and 79.1%, respectively.1.2 The distribution by city of articles indexed by PubMedA total of 4610 articles from JSMU were indexed by PubMed, which were from 85 cities. There were 22 cities with over 10 distributing and indexed articles. The top 10 cities with the largest number of publishing and indexed articles were Guangzhou 3114, Xi'an 226, Beijing 75, Shenzhen 62, Changsha 60, Foshan 57, Chengdu 45, Chongqing 44, Wuhan 31 and Dongguan 27.1.3 The distribution by high-frequency words of articles indexed by PubMed4610 indexed articles involved in 18 862 subjects. JSU was severally 205 (75.9%),219 (74.5%),219 (76.8%),225 (81.2%),238 (78.3%),232 (75.3%),235 (75.8%),180 (74.1%), respectively. JZU was 132 (89.8%),128 (91.4%),128 (92.7%),129 (86.6%),112 (84.8%),114 (79.2%),107 (74.3%),109 (85.2%), respectively. JCSU was 228 (97.0%),202 (97.1%),223 (94.9%),209 (97.2%),207 (91.6%),224 (85.2%),140 (70.1%), respectively.2.2 The distribution by city of articles indexed by PubMedIn JPU, there were 42 cities distributing 1107 indexed articles and its top cites were Beijing, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Changsha, New York, Shijiazhuang, Nanjing, Chongqing and Xi'an. The authors of 1753 indexed articles from JSU were from 50 cities and its top 10 cites were Chengdu, Xi'an, Chongqing, Kunming, Guangzhou, Beijing, Shijiazhuang, Zhengzhou, Chaozhou, Xuzhou. There were 959 indexed articles of JZU and they were from 30 cities and the top 10 cities were Hangzhou, Xi'an, Shanghai, Ningbo, Jiaxing, Linhai, Wenzhou, Nanjing, Beijing, Tianjin. In JCSU, there were 1637 indexed articles from 58 cities and its top 10 cities were Changsha, Xi'an, Beijing, Urumchi, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Fuzhou, Haikou.3 Statistical results on JSMU from Chinese Citation Database3.1 The number of published articles, the download count, statistic on cited and citingBetween 2003 and 2010, the largest yearly download count was 48692 in 2007 and the largest yearly cited count was 2744 in 2008.3.2 The ranks of authorsAuthors were ranked by the number of their publishing articles and the top 10 authors were LUO Rongcheng, XU Ruxiang, XING Fuqi, ZHENG Wenling, LAI Wenyan, DING Yanqing, HUANG Zhonghai, ZHENG Shaobin, ZHANG Xuelin and XUE Yaoming. In the rank of cited authors, the top 10 authors were LUO Rongcheng, ZHONG Shizhen, DING Yanqing, YUAN Lin, XU Ruxiang, XING Fuqi, ZHANG Meichao, ZHENG Wenling, CHE Xiaoyan and LI Jianyi.3.3 The ranks of citing journals and cited journalsThe top 10 citing journals were JSMU, Chinese Journal of Surgery, Chinese Medical Journal, Medical Journal of Chinese People's Liberation Army, Chinese Journal of Cancer, Chinese Journal of Clinical Anatomy, Journal of the Fourth Military Medical University, Chinese Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Chinese Journal of Clinical Rehabilitation and Chinese Journal of Trauma. The top 10 cited journals were JSMU, Journal of Clinical Rehabilitative Tissue Engineering Research, Journal of Zhengzhou University (Medical Sciences), Guangdong Medical Journal, Chinese Journal of Neuromedicine, Journal of the Fourth Military Medical University, the Journal of Practical Medicine, World Chinese Journal of Digestology, Journal of Tropical Medicine and Medical Recapitulate.3.4 The ranks of articles supported by fund According to the number of publishing articles, the top 5 funds were National Natural Science Foundation of China, Guangdong Natural Science Foundation, Guangdong Medical Science Fund, Guangdong Key Technologies R&D Program and National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program). According to the number of cited articles, the top 5 funds were National Natural Science Foundation of China, Guangdong Natural Science Foundation, Guangdong Key Technologies R&D Program, National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program) and Guangdong Medical Science Fund.Conclusions1 The articles from JSMU were selectively indexed by PubMed databaseThe yearly percentage of indexed articles, which were published in JSMU, were 85%-95% during 2002 and 2005. However they falled down to 70%-75% during 2006 and 2009. No matter what PubMed reduced indexing articles from JSMU, there was only one choice-improving the quality of the articles, increasing the number of articles with great originality and giving abstract for each articles as much as possible.2 The academic keystone of JSMU is relatively prominentFrom 100 top terms, it is shown that JSMU has formed following three academic keystones:the first area which takes human and animal experiments as research subject, the second area where tissues and neoplasm are investigated such as protein, gene, tissue, neoplasm, serum, mRNA, Cancer, DNA, artery, and so on and the third area which focuses on medical techniques and approaches.3 The population of core authors has come into being, but the cooperation level is not enough. There were 296 well-known authors with 6 or above articles in JSMU. Their articles account for 77.92% of JSMU, which was far beyond 50% in the Price law. It can be shown that the population of core authors has come into being. In JSMU, on average an article has about three authors. It shows that the cooperation level is not good.4 Most of well-known authors were academic leaders and the articles with high cited-frequency possess significant characteristicsMost of well-known authors were academic leaders, heads of department or project leaders and they were also supervisors of master students or PhD Candidates. Well-known authors rarely publish their articles as first-author. Ten of the top 20 authors of the cited-author rank take part in two or above projects. One high-quality article can make a major contribution to improving the cited situation of the journal.5 The core-journal proportion of citing journals is higher than that of cited journalsThe top 20 citing journals of JSMU were all core journal and 15 of the top 20 journals citing it were core journal. Therefore it shows that the quality of JSMU is high.6 The articles supported by National Science Foundation of China and GuangDong Province Science Foundation contribute greatly to JSMU.Between 2003 and 2010, JSMU published 5164 articles and there were 1412 articles were supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China, Guangdong Natural Science Foundation, accounting for 27.3%. Between 2003 and 2010, the total cited frequency is 17201 and the cited frequency of the granted articles 3174, accounting for 18.5%.
