Objective:To evaluate the effect of chemotherapy on fasting plasma glucose and glycated hemoglobin of patients with malignant tumors before and after Chemotherapy. Methods:Changes in fasting plasma glucose and glycated hemoglobin and related clinical data were retrospectively analyzed before and after chemotherapy among the 103 cases of malignant tumors admitted to our hospital from January 2008 to November 2010. All patients had no diabetes before chemotherapyResults:Among 103 patients with malignant tumors, there were 23 patients with elevated fasting plasma glucose (22.3%) and 21 cases with elevated glycated hemoglobin (20.4%) after receiving chemotherapy. As for the 23 patients with elevated fasting plasma glucose,4 cases are diagnosed as diabetes,7 cases as impaired glucose tolerance and 12 cases as transient hyperglycemia, accounting for 3.9%,6.8% and 11.7% respectively among the patients receiving chemotherapy. The fasting plasma glucose levels of the patients after the fourth cycle in chemotherapy (6.24±2.48 mmol/L) is obviously higher than that of the patients before the first cycle (5.28±1.01 mmol/L) (P<0.05); the average ratio of glycated hemoglobin of the patients after the fifth cycle in chemotherapy (6.26%±0.73%) is apparently higher than that of the patients before the first cycle (5.79%±0.41%) (P<0.05). The ratio (28.0%) of fasting hyperglycemia (≥6.1 mmol/L) of patients aged≥55 was obviously higher than that (7.1%) of patients aged <55 (P<0.05); the ratio (25.3%) of high glycated hemoglobin (≥6.5%) of patients aged > 55 was obviously higher than that (7.1%) of patients aged<55 (P<0.05); there were no significant differences in proportion of hyperglycemia and high glycated hemoglobin between the patients using glucocorticoid and without using glucocorticoid. Conclusion:Receiving Chemotherapy can cause elevated fasting plasma glucose and glycated hemoglobin in part of cancer patients.
