Objective:To investigate if there were polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in human rectum; To evaluate the difference of the contents of the PAHs between rectal tumor and normal rectum; And to investigate the effect of PAHs in the occurrence of human rectal tumor. Methods:PAHs in human rectal tumor, adjacent tissues and normal rectum were extracted by ultrasonic wave. And then the extracts were cleaned up by solid phase extraction and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detector. Results:Four kinds of PAHs were detected, which were phenanthrene, pyrene, 2-methylanthracene and benzo (a) pyrene. The content of benzo (a) pyrene in rectal tumor was more than other PAHs, which was (1129.3±333.9) ng/g; The contents of pyrene, 2-methylanthracene and benzo (a) pyrene in both rectal tumor and adjacent tissues were higher than normal rectum, the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). The contents of phenanthrene in the three kinds of tissues were not statistically significant (P>0.05). The contents of the four PAHs were not statistically significant between rectal tumor and adjacent tissues (P>0.05).Conclusion:(1) It is the first reported that PAHs were found in human rectal tissue. (2) Human rectal tissue has extremely strong ability of bioconcentrating PAHs. (3) The contents of PAHs in rectal tumor are higher than normal rectum, the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). (4) The contents of PAHs and the occurrence of human rectal tumor may have a certain correlation.
