Russian Double Negative

Double negative is a common phenomenon in every language. The most intuitive understanding of double negative is that including two negative components, at the same time semantic meaning is positive. However, based on a large number of linguistic facts, the definition above seems too broad, it is difficult to define the relevant phenomena in actual language. For example, the most typical feature of double negative is using two negative components, but which language unit can be called the "negative component"? What is the relationship between the two negative components? Different researchers answer to these questions inconsistently, and thus which structures can be classified as double negative is also controversial.This paper tries to present a comprehensive, objective reaserch about double negative by collection, collation, analysis, synthesis a lot of academic results in the field of double negative. In the research results summarized worthies to introduce the appropriate category, complemented by the author's comments, in order to not only make an objective description of double negative, but also have a subjective thinking on this important linguistic phenomenon.Scholars have different opinions on the problem of double negative. It is difficult to reach an agreement among scholars. This is due to two complicated reasons. One of them is that it is difficult to determine which negative marks and signs belong to forms of double negative, the other reason is that double negative expresses positive meaning, but certainly it has both contacts and differences with ordinary positive meaning, between them contain a variety of corresponding relationships. However, current reaserch about these relationships has not gone far enough.Type and structure of double negative is very complex and diverse, so it is equally difficult to reach a common opinion on these problems. Meanwhile, double negative also includes a variety of different types of basic format and multiple variants.The application of double negative is due to the need of pragmatic, so its syntactic features and semantic features are not very important comparing with its pragmatic functions, so in this paper only briefly introduced syntactic features and semantic features of double negative. Regards to the pragmatic functions of double negative, many scholars are limited to analyse only two aspects of double negative- euphemism and periphrastic, but in this paper concerned about the addition of other functions of double negative except the two functions above.Through these parts introduction and exploration, the author attempts to find the problems in the investigative field of double negative and make a comprehensive summary on the matter of double negative. Furthermore, the author has been full of confidence on the prospects of academic reaserch about the phenomenon of double negative. We hope that this paper can play an active role in promoting the further academic reaserch about the double negative, and at the same time we hope this paper can be used as a reference for further exploration on the relevant problems of doule negative.
