English textbooks have a great effect on English teaching work as an important media that the English teachers give English lessons in class. It is important to learn how to choose, analysize and make use of the English textbooks in our hand. Other problems are waiting to be resolved, such as how to compile, edit textbooks, how to reflect the occupation of higher vocational education and the application of textbooks.On the basis of the analysis of the current English textbooks some higher vocational colleges use and investigation to the factories, this article is discussed the applicability of higher vocational English textbooks and given some advice on English textbooks. This paper with the spirit of now curriculum form is on the basis of some relevant study results of educational theory, language learning theory, language teaching theory, and teaching material evaluation theory, and this study is conducted by the integrated means of research, questionnaire and interview. After analyzing the text and investigating the use of the existing problems in the use of the《New Practical English》, and specifical recommendations for its' improvement are made. In addition, a set of practical unit templates are designed for creating a practice—oriented and content—based compiling method of English textbooks for higher vocational education.According to present some documents issued by Ministry of Education, it's introduced to us the background, aims, kinds and significance of this paper and analysized the development of higher vocational English textbooks in our country. This article is given a description of research on English textbooks domestic and overseas, including the definition and function of English textbooks, studies of compiling and evaluation of English textbooks. It takes Changsha Commerce and Tourism college as an example to investigate the use condition of current higher vocational English textbooks and to analyze their practicability. It interviews some teachers and students about what can not be asked clearly in the questionnaire and some major problems reflected by the questionnaire. And according to the results of investigation and interview, the writer identifies the problems and analyzes the causes in the use of the materials and draw a conclusion to the application of English textbooks in higher vocational colleges of Hunan province from the aspects of market demand, students characteristics, materials design, materials content, classroom teaching and the status of teachers. Some constructive suggestions are giving in compiling textbooks, conceive of reform in contents, structure system and pattern. It is proposed to write applied English textbooks to fit the higher vocational English teaching and develop students' social ability in English. Finally, the article summarizes the main findings and points out the limitations of this study and the direction of further study in the future.
