In March 2020,the Ministry of Education officially released the English Curriculum Standard for Secondary Vocational Schools(2020 Edition),which clearly put forward English key competencies of secondary vocational schools.The Standard takes English key competencies as the curriculum goal,and further promotes the development of English curriculum reform in secondary vocational schools.The English textbooks of secondary vocational school by Shandong Pictorial Publishing House are the curriculum reform textbooks for vocational education in Shandong Province.Since the autumn of 2018,there have been more than 60 secondary vocational schools to use the textbooks in the province.As an important carrier of English course content,textbook is an important medium to realize the goal of English course.Based on the perspective of English key competencies,this study analyzes and evaluates the English textbooks of secondary vocational school by Shandong Pictorial Publishing House(basic module)in order to provide reference for textbook improvement and teachers’ using the textbooks effectively.In this study,text analysis is the main method,supplemented by questionnaire survey method.This study focuses on the following two issues:1.What contents in the textbooks(basic module)are helpful to cultivate students’ English key competencies?2.Do the textbooks(basic module)meet the requirements of developing students’ English key competencies? What contents need to be improved?A conclusion is drawn after the text analysis.The parts of Listening and Speaking,Reading and Grammar,Reading and Writing,Extended reading and Follow the master reflect the cultivation of students’ language communication ability in the workplace.The parts of Listening and Speaking,Reading and Grammar,Reading and Writing and Extended reading reflect the cultivation of students’ perceptive ability on thinking difference.The parts of Listening and Speaking,Reading and Grammar,Reading and Writing,Extended reading,Follow the master and Extended task reflect the cultivation of students’ cross-cultural understanding ability.The parts of Unit Goals,Reading and Grammar,Extended task and Self-check reflect the cultivation of students’ autonomous learning ability.According to the results of text analysis and questionnaire,this set of textbooks can meet the requirements of developing English key competencies generally except for a few deficiencies.To be specific,the deficiencies are as follows: the form of grammar exercises is relatively simple and mechanical;the subject and genre are not comprehensive enough;the authentic and interesting language materials need to be increased;the depth and breadth of cultural content are slightly inadequate;the cultivation of perceptive ability on thinking difference is not obvious.It does not provide students with learning methods and learning strategy guidance clearly.
