Intertextuality is originally a textual theory. It learns from deconstruction and post-modernism, emphasizing the uncertainty of the text itself. Since intertextuality is characterized by inclusiveness and openness, and it accords with the development direction of the textual theory, so intertextuality plays a very important role in literature research.However, it is Bakhtin, a Russian literary theorist, who transformed the textual theory into intertextuality. His "Dialogism" theory was making a big splash in the literary world. He emphasized that no texts can be produced without semantic field which they depend on. Since then, people are gradually realizing that texts are by no means close and stable, and a lot of scholars put forward their own opinions on intertextuality. There are many representatives such as, Julia Kristeva, Roland Barthes, and Genette. And some academic books focused on intertextuality have been published.In the 1960s, French textual theorist Julia Kristeva first officially put forward the concept of intertextuality. In Kristeva's word, "every text in constructed as a mosaic of quotations, every text is the absorption and transformation of other texts", which provides a brand new angle to develop the translation theory and practice.Films, as a special literary and artistic works, have exerted their influence upon every aspect of society. Especially in recent years, with the ever-increasing cultural exchanges between China and Western countries, a large number of English films have been introduced into China's film market, and Chinese films also find their way into world film market. Although many researches have been done about film title translation, there are still problems need to be solved. As an indispensable part of the film, film titles are of great guiding effects to audience. Translation of film titles is so important as to affect the box-office income. Therefore, we must pay more attention to film title translation. This paper adopts an intertextual perspective to explore film title translation and aims to work out a more satisfying solution to the translation of film titles.This paper consists of six parts. In the first chapter, introduction is made to describe the background, significance and structure of the study. Chapter two reviews the origins, development, classification of the theory of intertextuality, and the relationship between translation and intertextuality. Chapter three explains sources and main features of film titles, and the traditional translation methods and theoretical basis to film title translation. Chapter four is the main part of this paper. It discusses the main intertextual references found in film titles, including parody, allusion and idiom. Then, the author analyzes the significance of intertextuality to film title translation from three aspects, namely, information value, aesthetic value and cultural value. At the same time, the author cites a large number of examples to support the idea. Chapter five discusses translation strategies for film title translation under the guidance of intertextuality. Chapter six arrives at the conclusion that the theory of intertextuality provides a new viewpoint in understanding and translating film titles. The author also points out that the research in this field should be further deepened.
