With more and more people are interested in Chinese study, more and more foreign students come to learn Chinese. Consequently, more and more attention has been attracted to examine how to foster the students' awareness of Chinese Discourse Structure, such as the knowledge about who speaks first, the order of discourse, how one speaker gives the turn to another, how the speaker changes the topic, how the listener takes the turn, how to insert, how speaker continues his turn and how to end the discourse. For their communication in Chinese will be affected by how well they can grasp this knowledge. Besides, textbooks, as the main tools for Chinese teaching and learning, play very important role in TCSL. Based on theories of Discourse Analysis, this thesis analyzes the beginning and ending of discourses in 6 versions of primary oral Chinese textbooks used in TCSL. Through the analysis of abundant data, the merits and shortcomings of the beginning and ending structure are discussed; suggestions for the compilation of TCSL textbooks are also proposed.By applying theories of the beginning and ending of discourse, functional category and turn-taking, this thesis analyzed the beginning and ending of discourses in 6 versions of primary oral Chinese textbooks used in TCSL. Through the analysis of abundant data, the merits and shortcomings of the beginning and ending structure are discussed, suggestions for the compilation of TCSL textbooks are also proposed.This thesis consists of four chapters:Chapter 1 is an introduction. It first illustrated the reasons and significances for selecting this topic. As the quality of textbooks used in TCSL directly influences students' learning and the cultivation of their communicative ability, to analyze TCSL textbooks from the perspective of discourse analysis will not only provide guidelines and principles in the compilation of TCSL textbooks, but also expand the scope of the application of Discourse Analysis theory in TCSL. Then, this chapter briefly reviewed researches made by domestic experts, oversea experts and experts of TCSL in this field. Chapter 2 introduces the Discourse Structure theory and its basic notions. Discourse structure refers to the structure within a discourse, it studies topics like who speaks first, the order of discourse, how one speaker gives the turn to another, how the speaker changes the topic, how the listener takes the turn, how to insert, how speaker continues his turn and how to end the discourse. The basic notions in Discourse Structure theory include turn, turn-taking, feedback item, adjacent pair, the beginning and ending of discourse.Chapter 3 is an analysis of the beginning of discourses selected from 6 versions of primary oral Chinese textbook. The first two sections firstly introduced the types and modes of the beginning of discourse, and then it counted the data and analyzed the beginning of discourses between strangers. Meantime, the types and characteristics of the beginning of discourse between acquaintances and the correspondent data in 6 textbooks are analyzed. Section 3 and 4 analyzed the beginning of discourses from the perspective of functional analysis and turn-taking.Chapter 4 is an analysis of the ending of discourses selected from 6 versions of primary oral Chinese textbook. By discussing the preparation before ending, projected ending, negotiation sequence and before ending series and ending series, section 1 analyzed the ending of non-stylized discourse and stylized discourse. In section 2, the merits and shortcomings of the ending of discourses in these 6 textbooks are analyzed. At the end of this chapter, suggestions are proposed for the compilation of primary oral Chinese textbooks.
