Nowadays, rapid development of globalization and increasingly frequent economic, technological and cultural exchanges between nations are bringing translation in a huge demand. Under such circumstance, group translation has developed into a flourishing industry and the work of translators has become more and more the work of groups to meet the need of customers. At the same time, advanced information and communication technology and computer technology have also laid a solid technological foundation for the rising and development of group translation. However, it is with pity to note that few systematic researches and analyses have been made on such an important phenomenon. What characteristics do today's group translations have? What kinds of factors affect the effectiveness of these groups? Apart from factors that can be attributed to text and translation competence, are there other factors acting on translation groups? How are they related to each other? All these questions deserve close attention and explanation from translation studies. This thesis will observe the effectiveness of translation groups based on the team theory, introduce factors affecting team effectiveness, analyze the features of translation groups, and finally get the 18 factors and their model through a field study. The thesis is composed of six chapters. The first two chapters discussed the significance of the study and reviewed some academic findings proposed by other researchers on this subject. The third chapter presented the development of group translation from collaboration between an interpreter and a scribe to collaboration between a translator and a reviser, and finally to group translation. But this development is not chronological. Actually the model of group translation appeared early in history. Therefore, in the section of group translation, the author described the translation of Buddhist scripts, the Holy Bible and then modern group translation. The forth chapter introduced and drew research achievement from the team theory. Translation group is defined and its characteristics are discussed. Team effectiveness and team performance were also introduced to analyze the effectiveness of translation groups and the model of their affecting factors. The fifth chapter is a field study; it studied the importance of effectiveness-affecting factors and summarized 18factors in the form of a model. The conclusion provided the value and limits of the study, and presented some suggestions on further research on the subject.
