A Study On The Modernization Of Suzhou Tourism (1912-1937)

The tour of Suzhou has a long history and deep roots. Dates from the Spring and Autumn Period, it has experienced a development: developed in the Qin and Han dynasty, prosperity in the Tang and Song dynasty, reached its height in the Ming and Qing dynasty, transition in the Qing and early Republic of China. Before Taiping War, the tour of Suzhou district was effected deeply by tourism concepts of the Confucian school and regional social fashion. On one hand, the local tour passed down and gradually flourished. On the other hand, it always lacked of social conditions for popularization and market media for the trends of higher level, which suggested that ancient Suzhou's tour activities was in Chinese traditional tourism development track completely.The sudden Taiping War interrupted the process of Suzhou traditional tour quantitative change accumulation. During late Qing and early Republic of China period, Suzhou social situation was in stable relatively, with economic development, beginning of urbanization construction, travel started growing public-minded, which not only enhanced the tourists travel the ability to pay effectively, stimulating the desires of tour of townspeople, but also promote the preservation , scenic spot were developed and opened, providing a suitable environment for qualitative leap of modem tour.During the early days of the Republic of China, the tour's development of Suzhou was on the modernization path, gradually from traditional to modern form. The development of the modern Suzhou tourism shows in two respects: On the one hand, the spring up of new tourist activities as a representative of honeymoon trip, bicycle tour, science and technology with traditional tour activities. Inheriting from the culture for a thousand years, Suzhou's tourism begins emiting fresh breath of modern society. On the other hand,tourism industry as a representative of travel and tourism accommodations industry, tourism travel industry, starting certain scale, broking the small-scale, the fragmentation of the tradition tourism mode and ushered in the tourist areas of modernization of revolution.Effected by the environment and time, Suzhou tourism in modernization development process formed its own characteristics, reflected the modem tourism activities of Suzhou modernity and regional, embodying modern tourism characteristics of time and region, bringing positive economic and cultural benefits. In today's opinion, earlier stage of the Republic of China, although Suzhou tourism still existed certain historical limitations, but it is the key link of transition of the ancient tourist to modern tourism after all and also the root and prototype of modem Suzhou tourism. Putting Suzhou tourism in the Republic of China into Suzhou tourism history to make a macro vein, delineation the background of Suzhou's tourism modernization expression characteristics, effects and historical limitations of Suzhou tourism modernization is a pioneer work, and one of important topics of modern social life history.
