Scenery Discription In Cao Wenxuan's Children Novel

Natural scenery is inseparable from literature. However, it is not until May Fourth period that scenery description began to appear widespreadly in novel. Even in contemporary novels the independence and significane of scenery description has not been paid due attention. Novelists merely take advantage of scenery description to achieve the goal of creating atmosphere, moulding characters and expressing concepts and emotion.Cao Wenxuan's children novel is unique. His novels, which are usually set in his hometown---countryside in northern Jiangsu provinve, is the integration of the author's subtle observance to natural scenery. In his novel there is a great deal of description of natural scenery. Even the names of people, places and chapters are loaded with the sense of natural beauty. Therefore, the status of scenery description in his novel is dominant and independent. Meanwhile, as a scholar, Cao Wenxuan himself also makes a profound study of scenery description in children's fiction.This paper tries to find a new perspective to study scenery description. The author attempts to dig into Cao Wenxuan's children novels to find out the changed and unchanged parts; to highlight the dominant and independent status of scenery description; to demonstrate the importance of scenery description in children's literature; as well as to reflect the contemporary aesthetic value of children's literature by studying the impact of scenery description in children's novels on children life experience.The term "scenery" in this paper mainly refers to natural scenery--the natural features of a particular place that you can see, such as rivers, mountains, forests, deserts. By studying main characteristics of names of people, places and chapters of Cao Wenxuan's novels in past thirty years, the author tries to find out the main features and development of scenery description in his novels.The first part of this paper summarizes the changes of scenery description in classical novels, modern novels, contemporary novels and children novels, and reviews some major studies of scenery description in children's novels abroad and home. In addition, it defines the term "scenery" in this paper and clarify the perspective and method of this research.By analysing all the names of places, people and places in Cao Wenxuan's children nove, the second part tries to figure out the main categories of scenery description in his novel-- plant (the favourite scenery), the seasonal scenery (scenery of the life rhythm), hometown scenery (eternal scenery in heart ), color (beautiful scenery) and still life (subtle scenery).The third part aims to figure out the development of scenery description of Cao wenxuan's children's novels by studying the changed and unchanged content of scenery description in his novels during the past three decades. What he preserves is the classical, sacred and noble beauty. What has been changed is the status of scenery description --- from functional status to dominant and independent status.Finally, based on the above analysis, the thesis discusses the significant impact of scenery description in Cao Wenxuan's on children's life experience. Moreover, the author reflects the current situation and future trend of aesthetic value of children's literature.
