The theory of fuzzy language is firstly proposed by Zadeh, an American scholar in 1965. Later, it was widely recognized by the linguists all over the world. Fuzziness is regarded as one of the natures of language. The use of fuzzy language made a breakthrough to the traditional language using regulations—Language should be accurate, clear and vivid. In the daily life or literary works, we can find a plenty of fuzzy words, they made the expression more effective, and sometimes it even brings more accurate results than the accurate language does.Language can reflect culture and sometimes it can be affected by culture, as one part of language, fuzzy language also has a close relationship with culture. Since China and the western countries have totally different cultures, there must be some distinctions between the two languages in fuzziness. Therefore, the thesis intends to show a contrastive study in the differences between Chinese fuzziness and English fuzziness. The contrastive analysis will be carried out from the perspective of Semantics, Pragmatics and Rhetoric. After that, the root causes of the distinction will be discussed by a further analysis on different situations of Chinese and the western geographical environment, economic structure and the way of thinking. The research the author did must do some help between the foreign language teaching and the cross-cultural communication. Because the use of English and Chinese fuzzy language influences the cross-cultural communication greatly, communications are doomed to fail if they are neglected. Only by understanding the causes of the difference deeply can we help the communication from different cultures go smoothly.
