In the ten years since the beginning of the new century, the espionage war genre in television dramas has grown tremendously. In terms of both amount and quality, this genre has entered a definitively established stage, receiving more attention and building a greater following from TV audiences.An increasing amount of domestically produced espionage dramas have been released in recent years, and this genre continuously undergoes new developments. Narration aspects have slowly become more mature as new narrative characteristics individual to these productions emerge. Already, espionage dramas can be considered as an established genre to be analyzed. Considering this, this essay will begin by attempting to trace the origin and development of the espionage television drama as well as summarize the numerous reasons for their quick rise to popularity. Espionage dramas have also entered a unique area in terms of their usage of narration models and tactics, the combination of which will be explored in the second and third chapters respectively. The fourth chapter will recount how elements of sight and sound can amplify the power and effectiveness of narration. The fifth chapter will take the popular espionage television drama《潜伏》, Hidden, as a case study. Finally, this essay will review problems that exist within today's espionage dramas, as well as identify points for future development and improvement for this genre.
