Study Of Middle Chinese Serial-Verb Construction

Serial-verb construction is a special language structure in Chinese and is well studied by international researchers, but there is no specific research on serial-verb construction of middle Chinese and no work at present concerns about that domain. This thesis mainly researches on the synchronic review of structure and signification of serial-verb construction in middle Chinese literary work which includes Zhong Ben Qi Jing, Lun Heng, Liu Du Ji Jing, Zhuan Ji Bai Yuan Jing, Sheng Jing, Bao Pu Zi Nei Pian, Shi Shuo Xin Yu. In historical review, the relation between serial-verb construction of middle Chinese and other language structures relate to it is discovered by grammatical theory in history evolution.There are five chapters in the thesis. The first chapter is the introduction and it mainly introduces the research signification of this thesis, the present research status of serial-verb construction and other materials and methods relate to it. The second chapter classifies verbs in serial-verb construction from grammar and signification in order to research on the construction of verbs in serial-verb construction and their semantic categories. The third chapter mainly discusses the structure type of serial-verb construction in middle Chinese and classifies the structure into two categories of non-label and with-label by the detailed statistics of the above seven literary work, then it compares serial-verb construction with other verb structures. The fourth chapter discovers the semantic relation between verbs in serial-verb construction, the semantic relation between verb and subject and semantic direction of the adverbials in serial-verb construction. The fifth chapter investigates the relation between serial-verb construction in middle Chinese and verb resultative structure, disposal structure from grammatical theory.The thesis unifies the grammatical form and meaning, unifies the topic research and literary work research of middle Chinese, unifies the synchronic review and historical review, unifies the qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. It observes the evolution and change in serial-verb construction of middle Chinese and explains the language phenomenon in this process by the specific description of serial-verb construction in the chosen literary work.
