The word "Fiber Art" can be traced back to America in 1970s. Words like"Fiber Art", "Tapestry" and "Textile" are employed to help people's understanding of it. When "Fiber Art" is mentioned in China, words like "Dyeing and Weaving Art", "Knitting Art" and "Spinning Art" are regarded as its synonyms. Undoubtedly, fiber art is closely related to these synonymous items either from the dimension of history or the level of artistic technique. However, as a new category of art, fiber art has its unique feature. The history of fiber art indicates that many aspects of fiber art including the practical function, composition and exhibiting pattern have undergone a lot of changes in its spatial transformation from ancient fiber work to modern fiber art.The technological aesthetics lays the basis for the mature of fiber art. Of course, it's possible that appreciation exists at the technological level in the creation of ancient fiber works, but this factor is easy to be consumed because of the functional property of product. The modern fiber art has been detached from utilitarianism. Due to the aesthetic pleasure and experience in its creation, the creation process itself is an important part of the work, thus endowing the creation with the beauty of perception and the value of appreciation. Therefore, the modern fiber art is enriched with human caring and becomes an independent one in modern artistic form. The changes mentioned above put a new face on the creation of modern fiber art. Besides the modern stretch of traditional planar fiber work, the two-dimensional fiber work begins to transform into embossed ones spatially and even develops towards three-dimensional ones. The coexistence and interaction among the three trends constitute the basic framework and overall style of modern fiber art creation.
