With its intricate fascinating plot, Gothic violent emotions and incisive magnificent language, Wuthering Heights has maintained its great popularity among people. It can be regarded as one of the most classic novels (especially one of the greatest Gothic novels) written in English.Wuthering Heights is an exquisite work. As far as the writing technique is concerned, Gothic literature especially features the descriptions of emotions. This also reflects the particularity of the descriptions of emotions. Thus this point urgently waits to be discussed; it is also the essence of this thesis.Actually, the fiction has taken the Gothic mystical flavor as the media, showing the descriptions of emotions which are extraordinarily concise and poetic. Accordingly it has turned on soul-stirring artistic charm.In this thesis, in Chapter one, the researcher will firstly give a brief introduction to the whole thesis, including the rationale, significance and purpose of the study.In the second chapter, this research will study the general knowledge on Wuthering Heights and Gothic literature, and the integration of the two subjects concerning the descriptions of emotions will also be discussed.Chapter three mainly analyzes the unfolding of emotions. In order to investigate the rich meaning of emotions exposed in the novel in terms of Gothic literature, five aspects listed as below are mostly involved in this chapter:I. The unity of the dreary style and the brilliant thoughts and feelings in terms of Gothic traditionII. The marvelous choice of words in Gothic style for expressing emotionsIII. A profound portray of spiritual love with certain Gothic featuresIV. The symbols of Gothic literature reflected in the descriptions of emotions.V. Gothic Romanticism in the descriptions of emotionsChapter four deals with the narrative traits and guiding values serving the subject. the contraries with Gothic tension in the novel, and Gothic spirit of the characters and its significance embodied.Chapter five is a summary of the whole thesis; it is mainly about the implications and possible inspiration of this study.Consequently, the authoress of the thesis can investigate how this novel has made the readers fascinated enough to enter an uninhibited sentimental world which is full of varied imagination and emotions, and how it has built a mystical spiritual paradise with Gothic characteristics.
