But to the period of the Republic of China, the disasters in the shore of the Huai River occurred continuously. Almost there was not one year without disasters. The most influenced disaster was the flood. In the next place, there were drought, plague of locusts and pestilence. Facing the disasters, the Nationalist Government had taken some corresponding relief measures. But due to the restrictions of various unfavorable factors, the effect was minimal. The people living in these areas suffered endless pains. The disasters caused serious social consequences such as the damage of people's lives and properties and agricultural production, the increase of the refugees and the bandits. These social phenomena not only produced negative effects to the economic development of this region, but became the source of the chronically poverty and backwardness of the people living in there. In the process of fighting against natural and man-made disasters, people's production, life-style and social customs in this area had changed gradually. This thesis mainly researched the influences of disasters towards the people who lived in the Huai River during the period of the Republic of China and the opposite reactions of people's daily lives to the environment. |
