Deixis In The Perspective Of Pragmatic Empathy

Deixis has attracted great interest from philosophers, linguists, and logicians. Up to now, quite a lot of scholars have studied deixis from different perspectives, and have made important achievement on this topic, such as classification, function and features. However, as a complicated linguistic phenomenon and an indispensable part in our life, deixis is not yet fully interpreted in many fields and aspects, such as from the empathetic perspective.Empathy, on the other hand, which buries its root in aesthetics, has gained much attention in the field of aesthetics, psychology, and psychotherapy. Yet, as a linguistic or more specifically a pragmatic term, empathy has not been brought into full play.This thesis attempts to explore the nature of deixis by bringing emotional and empathetic factors into consideration. In addition, the thesis also attempts to investigate the nature, function mechanism and realization of empathy from the pragmatic perspective. The comparison between pragmatic empathy and some pragmatic principles such as Cooperative Principle, leads us to the integration of empathy and pragmatics. Thus, its value in pragmatic utterance could be explored. This thesis chooses literature works as the model of textual entity instead of daily dialogues, hoping to create a unity of linguistics, literature and aesthetics, and improve the skills in achieving pragmatic empathy to make communication go much more smoothly.Speaking of the way of research, this thesis attempts to make the following three points the main stands, that is deixis, empathy, and their pragmatic realization. The thesis also tries to integrate literature text with linguistic and aesthetic theory, thus to apply theory to practise, which could be more convincing.It is hoped that through this thesis, people could get a deeper insight about how the integration of deixis and pragmatic empathy works to improve the daily communication.
