As the subjective impression, the national image actually constitutes the psychological presupposition of the nation and its people. Nowadays the film industry has been a vital part of Chinese cultural industry and also been an important channel for people around the world to get to know China. With its cultural consciousness and influence, the film industry contributes to transmitting national culture. Besides all these benefits, there are also some problems in China's film industry, for example in order to attract the western audience, when it comes to art expression and cultural value, the film makers overstates the weirdness, folk customs and the underdeveloped sides. They might as well pander to the subject consciousness as promote Chinese film industry. To study the Chinese image foreign people get from the Chinese films and the relationship between Chinese film industry and the national image it builds and transmits, the paper will analyze the films that got awards from the four international film festivals (The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Venice International Film Festival, The Cannes Film Festival, the Berlin International Film Festival). Analysis will reveal the effect of the Chinese film especially those got awards in the international film festivals on the national image so that the author can offer better advice on how to help Chinese film industry develop in the world and build national image in a reasonable way.The paper contains the following chapters:Chapter One will be to build and transmit the national image which includes the concept of national image, the unique advantages of the film industry to transmit national image and the cross cultural transmission dimensionality of the film industry to build the national image. Chapter Two is the awarded films and Chinese image. There are introductions f the four International Film Festivals and the achievements of Chinese films, the analysis of some awarded films in the festivals. The detailed analysis of the awarded films goes the following:the fake folk customs and impoverished scene, the exploration of Zhang Yimous, martial arts chivalry in Chinese films, the banned and independence, the robbed Chinese cartoon images, the consideration of the success of western films, the main theme of films and the building of national image. Chapter will be the strategies of cross cultural transmission for films to build national image which include sound film forms, the clean and clear culture orientation, the strategies to connect the nationalization with localization.Content analysis and text analysis are applied to support the argument. Further analysis of the effect of the Chinese films especially those awarded on the building of national image, the author will give three aspects:first the author will analyze the national image and its building and transmission, the transmission of culture and national image to lead to the theme of the paper, that is films are the important way to transmit culture. Second, the author also explores the building of the national image based on the analysis of the content and characteristics of the awarded Chinese films and the operation of western films. Finally, the author tries to look forwards to the cultural mission and responsibilities of Chinese films, to analyze the cross cultural strategies of films building national image and to suggest how to make advantages of the films to build national image. To be concluded, because of its own complexity of various films and cultural differences, it is not precise to define national image of a country only starting from the films. The development of a country is most essential for the promotion of its national image. As a concept, the national image is the nation itself independent of people's will and its reflected images. National image originated and existed in the international circumstances, which originally reflects and is reflected by the objective situations. The cross culture transmission of the national image needs strategies including sound film forms, clean and clear culture position, and connection of the nationalization with localization.
