A Study Of Bamboo Flute And Daegeum

Flute is one of the first melodic instruments that invented by people. Although most of the nation in the world today are using flute,due to the geographical reasons and materials, they have difference in both shape and performing method.For instance,China is rich in bitter bamboo,black bamboo(Chinese bamboo flute).India is rich in thin bamboo(Bansuri), Middle East is rich in reed(Naiyi). However, digging oval hole, covering bamboo membrane,These unique inventions add feature to this musical instrument. So far, the author found only Chinese bamboo flute and Korean daegeum have oval hole and covering bamboo membrane.Chinese bamboo flute is full of Chinese characteristics.it's timbre is euphemistic and moving,The ancients named"cleansing voice".Therefore,the ancients called the bamboo flute "Di". Besides, the flute was also named "Zhu","Guxiandi","Dahengchui","Xiaohengchui","Changdi","Dizi","Zhudi", "Modi" and so on.Different kinds of air reeds have different number of holes, from three to eight. From the unearthed relics,we discovered that flute in the Warring States Period, Han Dynasty and Tang Dynasty usually has seven holes.After Song Dynasty flute has six holes become popular. Contemporary bamboo flute can be divided into "Qudi","Bangdi", "Diyindi"Daegeum is a kind of wind Instruments made by bamboo in Xinluo Dynasty. Korean daegeum is made from a modle of Chinese bamboo flute in Tang Dynasty. Daegeum always plays a important role in Korean musical history, but in many historical records,the name as "daegeum" is rarely used. "Daegeum "first appeared in the "Music" of the "Three Kingdoms", in which recorded three-stringed lute and three bamboo, daegeum is one of the three bamboo. Compared with late Gojoseon, Contemporary daegeum has a longer length, wider mouthpiece, and lower range.Daegeum is very similar to Chinese bamboo flute in shape and timbre,but also has a few differences.Both Chinese bamboo flute and Daegeum cover membrane,but the selection of membrane,covering method,and timbre are different. In view of these situations, this paper systematically introduces the origin, development process, material and construction, performing skills,and the masters of Chinese bamboo flute and daegeum, analyzes the similarities and differences in all aspects between the two instruments,and give constructive suggestion for their future development.
