Technique and methodology are the essence of Chinese fine arts that ancient artists have derived from common rules in life and creative works. Seemingly rigid and dogmatic, they are the product of human wisdom of upmost importance. "Pinetree, bamboo, plum and orchid", which are the four most popular subjects in Chinese traditional painting, carry the richest and most typical technique and methodology that have significant influence in Chinese art history. The origin of the "Pinetree, bamboo, plum and orchid" painting methodology is closely related to that of the Chinese traditional calligraphy. And the two art forms also share similar characteristics in presentation. There are great consistency and overlaps between the two art forms in terms of style, form and layout.Such association between the two art forms is by no means incidental, but a repetitive manifestation of the ultimate claims of Chinese culture in art creations and the demonstration of unified personality cultivation in different art works. This paper will interpret and study the nature and main attributes as well as key claims of the Chinese traditional painting technique and methodology and its impact on modern life through analysis of the traditional "pinetree, bamboo, plum and orchid" painting technique and methodology and comparison between such painting technique and methodology and that of Chinese traditional calligraphy.
