Ukiyo-e had profound influence on western art in the 19th century, especially deeply for the impressionists and post impressionists.This effect lasted for about fifty years, and in art history, people called it the fever of Japonism. when impressionists struggled with the official academicism and Hardly pursued new artistic path, Ukiyo-e which is widely different from the traditional art idea of Europe provided a way to turn color, space and shape to abstract and symbolic. Its special eastern style enlightenned the liberation from idea to skill for western artists, from then the world wide modern art motion had apparent east style. Ukiyo-e gave them source of inspiration,from works of Manet,Monet,Degas,Van Gogh and Gauguin we can see they gained a good deal of enlightenment,then from it they created their own artistic language. From the development of the art history, art exchange is never unilateral, Japanese artists were also influenced by the western art at the corresponding period; they also showed "westernization" in their works. This is the eastern art "meet" with western art for the first time. From mutual influence, eastern and western art developed the modern art, and the media is Ukiyo-e.Why did this art exchange happen? The reasons are profound. It also experienced complicated and long-time process. In this paper We had deeply analyzed the internal and external reasons to explain why impressionism painters only selected Japanese art, and how the five painters express enlightenment in their works. For the development process, we discussed the process of exploration from surface imitation to the techniques, Shape and aesthetics. The core of this article was that how the five Impressionist and Post Impressionist painters showed their inspiration from the oriental art.Meanwhile, we compared the influence of western painting style on Japanese artists at the corresponding period. Then We discovered the factor that there are some commonalities in the accepted process of artistic exchange.
