Abstract/Summary:
Zhu Kezhen (1890-1974) was a prominent geologist and educator of modern china. Previously, politically, he leaved an impression of being a progressive intellectual and red scientist on us. That is true to some extent. However, a person's mind and behavior are not static. Zhu's clues and specific contents of political development were masked intentionally or unintentionally, especially in the period of the Public of China when the political situation was roughly tense. In the period of the Republic of China, Zhu had a high position in the Kuomintang system, and he kept a deep relationship with many important officials. As Kuomintang was China's political center in this period, though Zhu was quite discontent with Kuomintang, he showed his understanding and consideration to Kuomintang's difficulties, at the same time, Zhu tried his best to maintain the Kuomintang's authority. Since the Communist Party was always the Kuomintang's mortal malady and Zhu had little knowledge about Communist Party, Zhu showed his bias to the ideology of class struggle of Communist Party and present his hostility to its practice constently. In real political life, Zhu tried to be an independent intelletual by avoiding participating in political issues. However, as the president of ZheJiang University, Zhu was involved in the political stream inevitably. Zhu's role is very embarrassing: he understood students' political enthusiasm, but he didn't support students' political activities; he kept a cooperation with Kuomintang, but, at the same time, he tried his best to resist Kuomintang's unreasonable repression policy cleverly; he was dissatisfied with the students's political activities, but he did his best to protect his students at the same time. Zhu kept a gaming relationship with Kuomingtang authoroties. With the deterioration of relationship between the radical students and the Kuomintang authorities, Zhu was not accepted by both of them in the end. In 1949, the regime was altered, Zhu made the decision of staying in mainland after ideological struggle. However, his choice to stay was irrelevant with his political emotions, whereas, with more and more contact and better understanding of Communist party, Zhu was deeply touched by its uncommon achievements and good quality. Finally, he accepted the Communist party completely, and since then, Zhu's political attitude had a disruptive change. This paper develops the idea based on the historical data of The Diary of Zhu which was collected by Complete Works of ZhuKezhen. The paper will elaborate the political attitude of Zhu from different aspects, argues the dynamic process of his attitude changes, and analyzes the reasons for the changes. In this paper, the author attempt to refigure Zhu's political image, and the author believes that this work will improve the research of intellectuals who lived in the society which was a transition period, and the author believes that this work will do some good to the research of the history during the Republic of China.
