Xinhua Dictionary which is the most influential and authoritative Chinese dictionary in all small character dictionaries to this day and is also a universal dictionary which has a profound impact on Chinese culture and education, has made important contributions to the popularity of the whole nation's culture and knowledge. But the studies about Xinhua Dictionary are focused on whether is standard in choosing the fore-characters, affirming the pronunciations of those selected characters, setting the meaning items, selecting the examples, the usage of punctuations and making comparisons with Chinese Modern Dictionary in selected characters and the differences in interpretation..Large-scale and specialized researches on interpretation characters of Xinhua Dictionary has not yet appeared. Deeping the researches on interpretation characters and speeding up the process of controlling and limiting the quantity of interpretation characters, is of great significance to the modernization of the interpretation methods of dictionaries. Meanwhile, increasing the researches on the interpretation characters of conference books such as dictionary can push the development of character–teaching in both domestic elementary education and teaching Chinese as a foreign language. The research is focus on all the interpretation characters used by Xinhua Dictionary and has used research methods such as quantitative analyses, probability and statistics and semantic comparison etc to do the following reseaches:First, by doing research on closed statistics of frequency towords all the interpretation characters of Xinhua Dictionary, obtain concerning data and conclude the basic interpretation character glossary of Xinhua Dictionary.Secondly, analyze the characteristics of high-frequency interpretation characters and put forward the proposals which can make high-frequency interpretation characters play more important roles in teaching. Analyze the interpretation characters which only appear once from the semantic angle, make a comprehensive study of the context in which they appear to find the characters which are more commonly used for interpretation. Meanwhile, analyze and study the unreasonable methods when the chacters which only appear once are used and put forward practical solutions. In addition, by analyzing all the interpretaton characters and all the problems about interpretation methods, we have discovered five kinds of unreasonable and non-standard phenomena.Finally, compare the basic interpretation characters of Xinhua Dictionary(including 3315 characters) with "Character grade syllabus" (including 2905 characters) and compare all the interpretation characters of Xinhua Dictionary (including 4216 characters)with"Modern Chinese characters commonly used"(including 3500 characters), in the hope of providing some suggestions and references for the revision of character teaching syllabus in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, character teaching glossary in domestic elementary educatio and concerning dictionaries.
