E-C Translation Of Language Deviation:A Translation Report Of “the House Of The Dead Hand”

The short story “The House of the Dead Hand” written by Edith.Wharton, a famous writer with good education and grasp of European culture, is a classic novel of manners with its vivid description of the European society. It is characterized by elaborate language,eloquent allusion and distinctive style of subtle satire, all of which are presented in the form of language deviation with stylistic,aesthetic and communicative values. Language deviation is a key concept in linguistics and stylistics, proposed by Russian linguist on the study of poet and poetics. It is defined by Chinese scholar Wang Zuoliang and Ding Wangdao as the adoption of deviated language,compared to its common core. According to the classification of Chen Songcen, the author classifies the language deviation in the text into two groups:deviations in vocabulary and grammar.Firstly, the article briefly introduces the relevant theories and research review on it;Secondly, it features the stylistic, aesthetic and communicative values of language deviation;Thirdly, it summarizes the translation methods on the two types of language deviation; Finally,it points out that the study on language deviation will have a far-reaching effect on literary translation.Based on the translation practice, the author has reached a conclusion that formal equivalence is not desirable and equivalence in effects should be taken as the foothold in the translation of language deviation.
