Along with the frequent national communication among countries, the demand for high-quality translators in our country increases greatly. However, a serious problem lying in front of us is that the number of China's translators lagged far behind the demand, for the traditional translation teaching can hardly cultivate translators who can satisfy the demand of market, so it is necessary to improve the traditional translation teaching. Translation teaching for undergraduates of English major is an important part of translation teaching and also the enlightening and basic stage of translation, which is crucial to the future development of students. For these reasons, on the basis of the analysis of the current condition of translation teaching for undergraduates of English major, this thesis will propose a translation teaching model to cultivate translation talents that meet the demand of market. To do this, this thesis will mainly answer the following four problems:1.What's the current situation of the translation teaching for undergraduates of English major? 2. Based on the survey of undergraduates of English major, what are the problems existing in current translation teaching? 3. What kind of translation talents do we need? 4. How to solve the problems existing in current translation teaching?Based on the components of students'translation competence, the author designed a piece of questionnaire.60 pieces of questionnaire were distributed to the undergraduates of English major in Shanxi Province. After analyzing these data, we conclude the following results:students'bilingual sub-competence is the strongest, then the instrumental sub-competence, knowledge about translation sub-competence, extra-linguistic sub-competence and strategic sub-competence. Through analysis of these sub-competences, we find that there are the following problems existing in current translation teaching:1. the translation teaching ignores the social needs; 2. teachers' qualities is far from giving students constructive suggestion on translation; 3. the translation teaching materials are confined seriously; 4. the translation teaching ways can not keep pace with the development of the society. The results of the survey show that in order to cultivate high-quality translation talents, the traditional translation teaching model should be improved. Combined with the above results, this paper puts forward a new translation teaching mode of cultivating students'translation competence, aiming at improving the students'translation competence to meet the demand of market. This model consists of three parts. The first part aims to develop students'knowledge about translation sub-competence, help them attain a good understanding of translation and translation profession from a macroscopic perspective. The second part is the replenishment of the first part, which put emphasis on consolidating the knowledge taught in the first part. The third part intends to cultivate students'bilingual sub-competence, instrumental sub-competence, extra-linguistic sub-competence and strategic sub-competence. In this part, taking the students as the center of the class and authentic projects as the teaching content, the class learns in groups collaboratively. Through exposing students to all the possibilities in translation practice, students'translation competence will be cultivated. Focusing on cultivating students' translation competence, the model is helpful for them to get a job after graduation. The author wishes that this thesis will be useful in improving the teaching quality, promoting the development of translation as a discipline and cultivating more qualified translation talents for our society.
