Translation is a way of building bridges between different cultures, languages and races all over the world.Such exchanges can not only spread China's extensive and profound culture to the world, but also introduce the culture of other regions to China. Therefore, translation is becoming more and more important today.Translation activities need professional translators to achieve good results. The problem that China is facing now is that the quantity of professional translation talents is small and the quality is low, which is not conducive to China's foreign cultural exchange activities. In the case of serious shortage of professional translation talents,English majors,as the reserve force of translation talents, are very important and necessary for the cultivation of their translation competence.Based on the PACTE model of translation ability, this paper studies the translation competence of students from four classes of English major in grade 2015 of Northeast Petroleum University,a high-level local university. It analyzes what sub-abilities they lack in their translation competence and the problems they have in their translation ability through the translation of TEM-8 and questionnaire.Based on the overall analysis and summary of the test and questionnaire, and through the combination of qualitative and quantitative research, according to the current situation of English major undergraduates' translation competence, this paper comes to the following conclusions: 1)the bilingual subcompetence of English major students is slightly poor, especially the translation competence of combining vocabulary and grammar knowledge with context;2)extra-linguistic subcompetence is poor, especially lack the knowledge of culture;3)low strategic subcompetence, unable to solve problems in translation perfectly;4)English major undergraduates have the competence to use tools in the translation process, but they only use a single type of translation tools;5)lack of professional knowledge in translation;6)psychological-physiological competence insufficient factors. There is a lack of confidence, but a willingness to learn.Based on the research results, this paper puts forward some suggestions for the cultivation of translation competence. It is suggested that efforts should be made in improving translation teaching objectives, improving translation teaching methods, perfecting translation teaching contents, applying modern information technology means, improving translation teachers' quality, increasing translation practical activities and constructing translation teaching evaluation system,so as to better realize the cultivation of translation competence. In this way,the society and scholars will pay more attention to it,deepen the research on translation competence, improve the level of training translation talents, build a high-level translation team, and accelerate the "going out" of Chinese culture.
