Since the 1970's, the emphasis of translation studies has been shifted from linguistic equivalence and translation studies have been done under cultural background. In domestic and western translation studies, many translators have paid much attention to cultural impact on translation. Moreover, studies on the relationship between culture, language and translation have been increased since the 1980's. But different translators have different ideas about cultural translation strategies.Under the background of globalization, studies on cultural translation strategies have become more and more important. This thesis tries to find some proper cultural translation strategies through the translation of tourist public materials in view of functionalism, especially Skopostheorie. By reading functionalism we know that the factors, such as the purpose of translation, the functions of a text, the cultural situations where the target text is received, etc., are all playing a leading role in translation. Therefore, functionalism is feasible and effective in cultural translation. Finally, the thesis reaches conclusions that literal translation, amplification, omission, rewriting and paraphrase are proper cultural translation strategies.
