With rich tourism resources, China has been attracting large numbers of inbound tourists. In recent years, the number of foreign tourists has rocketed up since the policy of opening up to the outside world. Under such circumstance, translation of tourist publicity materials has caught more and more translators’ attention. As a platform for foreign tourists to know China, the translation versions have an influence on the transmission of tourism information and Chinese culture. However, the qualities of existing translation versions vary. To some extent, the tourism in China is affected by the poor translation. Besides, there are still numerous scenic spots where translation versions of tourist publicity materials can hardly be found. Tourist Attractions in Fengyang County, a tourist publicity book introducing scenic spots in Fengyang, lacks the translation version. For the purpose of attracting inbound tourists, the author translates the excerpt from the book into English.Translation is regarded as a kind of human activity. The purpose of the translation determines the process. According to Skopostheorie, flexible translation strategies and methods can be adopted in line with the functions and purposes of the target text. Considering that the translation of tourist publicity materials has a specific purpose, the author discusses the translation difficulties and suggests translation methods with the help of this theory.This report includes five chapters. The first chapter introduces the background information, aims and the structure of this project Chapter two analyzes functions and features of the source text. Chapter three concerns itself with the definition and development of Skopostheorie and points out the enlightenment of the theory on the C-E translation of the source text. The fourth chapter discusses the translation difficulties in terms of two aspects, respectively problems of the source text and difficulties in dealing with the language and culture differences between Chinese and English. And the corresponding translation methods are suggested, which include transliteration, annotation, literal translation, amplification, omission and reconstruction. The last chapter makes a conclusion about translation experience and inadequacies. |
