China develops the tourism industry rapidly in recent years. As a newly developed tourism city, Yulin City is confronting great challenges and opportunities. More and more foreign tourists come to visit Yulin and at the same time provide valuable business opportunities. The booming international tourism industry cries for the high-quality translated tourist materials to attract more potential foreign tourists to visit Yulin. However, the quality of existing translated tourist materials of Yulin is far from satisfactory. The errors in these materials will cause misunderstanding or even fail to achieve their intended functions. Owing to such a dilemma, an in-depth study is required to solve the problems and improve the quality of the tourist translation. This dissertation attempts to carry out a study on the C-E translation of tourist materials of Yulin City to find out the existing problems and propose possible strategies from the perspective of Skopostheorie. With the notion of "the end justifies the means", Skopostheorie provides translator with a flexible stage to perform. It regards translation as a purposeful activity, and the skopos of translation goes first than any other components involved in the process of translation. What the translator of tourist materials has to bear in mind in the process of translation is the skopos of translation and the intended functions should be achieved. This dissertation has confirmed that Skopostheorie is effective in offering guidelines in tourist material translation. It makes various translation practices and techniques feasible and workable.Through contrastive analysis on the differences between Chinese and English tourist materials from the perspective of language features and cultural differences, the author finds that they differ greatly in writing style, wording, use of second personal pronoun, ideology, aesthetics and custom. Chinese tourist materials tend to employ flowery writing style rich in four-character collocations, rhetorical devices including parallels, personification, quotation and so on. Meanwhile, English tourist materials are often written in a concise narrative style by using plain words and direct expressions. As a result, when translating tourist materials into English, the translator must pay attention to the style of the translated version which should fall in with the wishes of the target text readers. Next, author probes into the intended functions of tourist material translation and finds out that the informative function and vocative function are the two main functions, and the ultimate purpose of tourist material translation is to translate meaningful tourist materials with the real sense of the local custom and culture.Only on the basis of discovery about the existing problems in the present tourist materials of Yulin City can the effective approaches be proposed. By analyzing the causes of the existing problems, the author proposes the strategies of foreignization in culture factors and dynamic combination of foreignization and domestication in language form. In hopes of offering the reference for tourist material translation, improving the quality of translation and promoting the tourism industry in Yulin City, some feasible techniques are put forward to translate the tourist materials under the guidance of Skopostheorie:transliteration plus literal translation, addition, omission, interpretation, analogy.
