The impacts of first language (native language) have always been the focus of second language acquisition researchers in the field of language teaching. The core of language transfer studies at home and abroad has always been the studying of the impacts of native language on second language, which can be further classified into three groups: one, negative impacts play a more important role than positive impacts in the field of second language acquisition; some other scholars deny or underestimate the existence of relationship between native language and second language acquisition; in recent years there are still some other scholars who insist that the relationship between them is a kind of interdependence or interaction on the deeper surface and the positive impacts of native language on second language acquisition are more important than its negative impacts. Based on the above opinions, this research studies the transfer forms of native language on ESL learners with the method of quantitative and qualitative analysis in the process of English writing, which is divided into two stages in this thesis: planning and specific writing procedures. Subjects are 100 college sophomores in a college who are required to do a questionnaire and finish the composition in given time, through the analysis of which the following results are gained: positive transfer is the main form of transfer at the planning stage and at the production stage negative transfer plays a more important role. However, little as it is, it cannot be neglected that at the productive stage native language do have some position impacts on second language acquisition. Based on the above findings, it is concluded that the impacts of native language on ESL writing, the main form of which is obstruction, which is called negative transfer in this thesis. And positive impacts do exist in certain stage of ESL learning, which can not be neglected.This thesis is made up of five chapters. Chapter One is the introduction which covers research background, aims and the thesis organization. Chapter Two is literature review made up of the history and status of transfer researches at home and abroad and its theoretical frame. Chapter Three is methodology, composed of subjects of the research, design of the research and expected results. Chapter Four contains description and analysis of questionnaires and writing assignments, where the qualitative and quantitative analyses are both involved in the analysis of subjects'compositions and their marks, on the basis of which the expected results are proved reasonable and the last chapter includes the discussion and conclusion, in which the implications for English teaching and the limitations of the present study are listed.
